Software Engineer 2 (SDET)

About This Role

Illumina is seeking a Software Engineer (SDET) to build and modernize test infrastructure for their DNA sequencing instruments, focusing on CI/CD automation, AI-assisted development, and shift-left practices.

Responsibilities

• Design and build automated test frameworks for DNA sequencing instruments.
• Create and maintain CI/CD pipelines to validate embedded software end-to-end.
• Automate tests in parallel with feature development for early validation and feedback.
• Drive shift-left practices to catch defects before they reach system-level testing.
• Act as a true engineering partner by improving code quality and testability rather than serving as a downstream tester.
• Perform exploratory testing to surface issues automation cannot easily catch.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, AI/ML, or related field.
• 2+ years of experience in software test development, automation engineering, or software development.
• Experience with biotech, bioinformatics, or scientific instrumentation software is a plus.
• Proficiency in Java, Python, C#, TypeScript/JavaScript, and Playwright/Karate.
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes (K3s), Linux Shell, and PostgreSQL.
• Strong debugging skills across application, test, and infrastructure layers.
• Ability to collaborate globally on complex challenges using AI tools.
